Ben Simmons announced on Twitter and his Weibo page Tuesday night that he will play for the Australian national team in this summer’s FIBA World Cup.
Simmons, who is from Melbourne, Australia, expressed his gratitude to Philadelphia 76ers fans for supporting the team throughout the season. The Sixers were eliminated from the playoffs Sunday when they lost 92-90 to the Toronto Raptors.
The Boomers will play two exhibition games in Perth against Canada on Aug. 16 and Aug. 17. The Boomers will also play two exhibition games against Team USA on Aug. 22 and Aug. 24.
On his Weibo page, Simmons said, “Ni Hao China! Thanks for all the support this season, it was a tough way to go out. I’m happy to say I’m looking forward to representing my country Australia in the upcoming @FIBA World Cup in China! Stay tuned.”
Simmons last played for the Boomers in 2013, when the team won the gold medal against New Zealand in the FIBA Oceania Championship.
