Report: Carmelo Anthony to Lakers an ‘unlikely option’

Carmelo Anthony’s NBA future is in question, and with the offseason trudging on into August, most teams have their rosters full.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been a potential landing spot for Anthony, as they looked at signing him last season. But with the Lakers having one more roster spot, the likelihood of Anthony joining the team reportedly “appears to be an unlikely option,” per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Anthony became a free agent after the Chicago Bulls waived him in February after acquiring him in a trade from the Houston Rockets. Anthony’s time with the Rockets didn’t go well. He played in 10 games with Houston last season, averaging a career-low 13.4 points per game.

Per Charania’s report, Anthony wanted to stay with the Rockets. But the Rockets had a rocky start to the season, and they struggled with injuries to players such as James Harden. Anthony received blame during this period, according to a source Charania spoke with.

“A lot of the blame was put on Carmelo, but he really should have thrived with the offense and system if the season started properly health-wise,” one Houston source said. “‘Melo was the scapegoat.”

Despite Anthony having a rough season, he is still one of the most offensively gifted players the NBA has ever seen. He has a career average of 24.0 points per game, and he won the scoring title in the 2012-13 season.

Though Anthony isn’t as great a scorer as he was, he can still contribute for a team, particularly one that’s looking to contend for a title.

Still, while the Lakers are probably the only team Anthony could legitimately fit with, they also have an abundance of forward depth. It’s unknown whether Kyle Kuzma will start, but he will be playing big minutes. Along with Kuzma, the Lakers also have Jared Dudley and a swingman in Danny Green.

Anthony could struggle to find his role with the Lakers as coach Frank Vogel works to manage everyone. As the offseason progresses, it’ll be interesting to see if Anthony, one of the best scorers in league history, can find a home.
