Brett Brown calls Joel Embiid ‘crown jewel’ at media luncheon

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid had a career year last season, and his MVP-caliber play was indicative of how dominant he could be.

Sixers coach Brett Brown spoke highly of Embiid at a media luncheon he held Wednesday, calling him the team’s “crown jewel,” per Sixers Wire’s Ky Carlin.

The Sixers are positioned to be atop the Eastern Conference along with the Milwaukee Bucks this upcoming season. Philly has an improved bench, and its starting five has good balance.

Josh Richardson brings athleticism, shooting and perimeter defense. With his shooting ability, Al Horford can provide space for Embiid to work down low. Ben Simmons will need to show he can boast a serviceable jumper, but his ability to facilitate and defend multiple positions shouldn’t be undervalued. Tobias Harris is in line to be the team’s second option behind Embiid with his shooting and scoring ability.

Embiid being the Sixers’ No. 1 option really shouldn’t be up for debate, though. He scored a career-high 27.5 points per game last season and grabbed 11.1 rebounds a game. Embiid had 28 games where he scored at least 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The question with Embiid, however, involves his health.

Last season Embiid had left knee soreness after the All-Star break, missing 14 of the last 24 regular season games. Embiid only missed one game in the playoffs, but he also struggled with gastroenteritis and an upper respiratory infection.

For the Sixers, Embiid being healthy is of the utmost importance, especially in the playoffs.

While the Sixers probably won’t have to rely on Embiid as much defensively this upcoming season, his presence on the floor will still be necessary for Philly to reach its full potential.
