Jordan Poole is working on filling Klay Thompson’s off-ball role

Golden State Warriors guard Jordan Poole is one of the franchise’s five rookies on the training camp roster, and with his shooting ability, he has an opportunity to make a quick impact this upcoming season.

While at Warriors Media Day on Monday, Poole spoke of how the Warriors have worked with him over the summer on off-ball actions and pin-downs.

Poole said with his offseason work, he’s going to try to temporarily fill Thompson’s role of coming off screens and shooting jumpers. Thompson will reportedly be out at least until the All-Star break with a torn left ACL. Thompson suffered the injury during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors.

“With Klay (Thompson) being such an amazing shooter, coming off the ball,” Poole said, per NBC Sports Bay Area. “Whenever Steph (Curry) has the ball or (D’Angelo Russell) has the ball, being able just to make shots.”

Though Poole likely won’t start, he can bring good shooting off the bench. Poole was a quality shooter while at Michigan, and while he’s not the Hall-of-Fame caliber shooter Thompson is, he can knock down open shots.

During his two seasons with the Wolverines, Poole shot an average of 37% from the three-point line. Last season, Poole ranked ninth in the Big Ten for three-point field goals (75), according to Basketball Reference.
